Annual Awards Presentation
On Monday June 7, 2010, the annual school presentation to the Hawthorne Environmental Commission concerning student participation in environmental education activities was held at the Hawthorne Municipal Building Courtroom. Local Hawthorne residents and a local business were specially honored for their environmental awareness and efforts within the community. A PowerPoint presentation was presented by the Environmental Commission celebrating the April 17, 2010 Cel-Earth-Bration and Community Shredding Day. Students representing the elementary, middle school, and high school discussed Cel-Earth-Bration, as well as the Kids to Kids and Capri Sun Pouch Collection programs. Middle School and High School Ecology Clubs, "Pennies for the Planet", Meadowlands Environmental Center trip, and Save the Frogs programs were also discussed.
Ms. Susan Balik and Mrs. Lynne VanderVeer started a fund raiser campaign in St. Anthony's School to sell stainless steel containers. Ms.Balik and Mrs. VanderVeer heard about the "Back2Tap" program from the 2009 Cel-Earth-Bration. A total of 50 stainless steel containers were sold and profits will be donated to the St. Anthony's Boys Scout troop to provide assistance to Mr. Matthew Chatten's Eagle Scout project.
Mrs. Hazel Pinos initiated the Capri Sun Pouch collection in Jefferson School. Mrs. Pinos collected 2,254 Capri Sun Pouches and received $45.00 from TerraCycle. The money was donated to Jefferson School. Mrs. Pinos was specially recognized for her grassroots efforts to preserving the environment in Hawthorne.
Mr. Joe Clementi, Mr. Doug Morgan and Ms. Ellen Brogno were recognized for their continued efforts in furthering Hawthorne's recycling program and providing assistance to the Environmental Commission.
Mr. John Bertollo, Keystone Club members of the Boys & Girls Club, and Mrs. Charlene Elvin were recognized for their participation and their work in the development and implementation of Hawthorne's 1st Community Shredding Day.
Mr. Phil Savoie, Hawthorne's Shadetree Commission Chairperson, was recognized for contributions and participation in Cel-Earth-Bration.
Mr. John Dorval was recognized for his work to the Environmental Commission in their pursuit for Sustainable Jersey certification.
Lastly, Mr. John Puzo, Puzo's Family Restaurant, was recognized for taking the initiative and taking steps in his business to reduce energy and greenhouse gases. Puzo's is the first business in Hawthorne to install solar panels.
