BOROUGH COUNCIL

MESSAGE FROM THE COUNCIL PRESIDENT:

Dear Friends,
It looks like the warmer weather has finally arrived. Now we can enjoy barbeques sitting in the back yard relaxing and socializing with friends, gardening and bike riding. For our children little league, softball and JD baseball has started.  Soon graduations and weddings will fill our weekends.
Since we spend so much time outside during the Spring and Summer we must also remember to be good neighbors and friends. Remember to be considerate of noise and loud music. Invite your neighbors to join you or maybe plan a block party. Nothing builds community more then when neighbors get together and shoot the breeze and share a meal.
Remember at the ball fields that while you're expected to root for your child and his team that the players on the other team go to school with your children, live in your neighborhood and might even be your child's best friend. While coaches try to teach sportsmanship your child also looks to you. Set the right example; remember its recreational sports a chance for all children regardless of ability to play an organized sport.
When we drive through down we must be aware of children and adults who may unexpectedly dart into the street. When walking watch out for traffic. Take pride in Hawthorne and pick up litter rather then walk by it. Say hello to people as you walk by people who live here are nice people lets make Hawthorne a friendlier town.
Someone once said that good fences make good neighbors. I believe that good people make better neighbors. Enjoy the warm weather and remember that all of us on the Council are here to serve you. Let us know of your concerns and we will try to help

Sincerely,

Rich Goldberg
Council President

The Borough Council performs the legislative functions of Hawthorne's government – passing ordinances and resolutions, approving the annual budget, giving advice and consent on various mayoral appointments, and approving liquor license renewals as well as various other licenses and permits.  Council members are elected for four-year terms, with those of the ward members overlapping those of the at-large members.  The Borough Clerk serves as secretary to the Council.

The Council generally holds its meetings on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, with a work session at 7 pm, and the regular meeting at 8:00 pm. Members of the public are invited to address the Council during the regular 8:00 meeting – at the beginning of the meeting on agenda items, during individual hearings on ordinances, and at the end of the meeting on general items.
