Your garbage cannot weigh more than 50lbs, per can.  All garbage brought to the curb, except for garbage during bulky waste, must be in garbage cans. IF THERE IS ANY recyclable material in your garbage, garbage will not be collected.  See warnings and stickers.

Your recyclables can also be brought to the recycling center.

Recycling Center

The recycling center is located behind the baseball fields on Wagaraw Road.  Ryerson Way is the name of the driveway into the recreation/recycling complex.  The center is open Monday through Saturday from 9AM until 3:45PM and on Sundays from 11:30 until 3:15PM from September through January.

Bulky Waste

Bulky Waste is collected on your first garbage collection day of the month.  There is a limit to six bulky items per pickup.  A bulky item can be a piece of furniture, an extra bag of garbage, a door, toilet, or window.  It cannot be construction debris, metal, an appliance, an electronic, or recyclable.  If there is more than six additional items at the curb, the additional items will not be collected.

Business Solid Waste and Recycling

Businesses are allowed to put out up to two 50 gallon garbage cans for weekly garbage collection.  There is no limit to the amount of recycling a business can put to the curb.  For more information on rules and schedule for municipal curbside collection, see above.

If a business has a dumpster, it must be screened from public view.

New Jersey State Law forbids any business from mixing recycling with garbage.  In Hawthorne, if a business does not recycle, a summons will be written with the business owner being fined.

Businesses can use the recycling center for all of their recycling needs.

In the first quarter of every year, businesses receive a questionnaire that must be returned to the Hawthorne Office of Recycling regarding their recycling program.  This report is required by state law.
