Leaves and Yard Waste

YARD WASTE

The term "yard waste" includes GRASS, BRUSH, BRANCHES (under 4' long or 4" in diameter) and LEAVES.

The term "yard waste" does not include DIRT, ROCKS and VERY LARGE (over 4' long or 4" in diameter) BRANCHES

Yard waste is collected at the curbside one time per week from April 1 until October 31.  The day your yard waste is collected is determined as follows:

Zones 1 and 3 are collected on Tuesday (place at the curbside Monday evening)
Zones 2 and 4 are collected on Wednesday (place at the curbside Tuesday evening)

An easy way to determine your yard waste pickup day is as follows:

If your GARBAGE is picked up on Tuesday or Wednesday, your yard waste is picked up on TUESDAY.
If your GARBAGE is picked up on Thursday or Friday, your yard waste is picked up on WEDNESDAY.

Yard waste may be put to the curbside in paper, NOT plastic bags. Yard waste may also be put to the curbside in trash barrels not exceeding 32 gallons in size. LARGE GREEN LANDSCAPER BARRELS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. Yard waste put to the curbside in landscaper barrels or plastic bags will NOT BE PICKED UP. Branches and brush must be cut to lengths of no more than 4' then tied and bundled in bundles weighing less than 50 pounds if no bag or barrel is used.

Yard waste, EXCLUDING GRASS may be brought to the Hawthorne Recycling Center (Ryerson Way off Wagaraw Blvd at the baseball fields) during regular hours of operation, however, GRASS CLIPPINGS ARE NOT ACCEPTED AT THE RECYCLING CENTER AT ANY TIME.

LEAVES

Curbside Collection (bagged or in barrels only)

Collection of LEAVES ONLY continues on the same once a week schedule as yard waste. Weekly collection of LEAVES ONLY begins on the first Tuesday and Wednesday in November through the second Tuesday and Wednesday in December. Leaves put out for weekly curbside collection must be in biodegradable paper bags or barrels. Bagging leaves in paper biodegradable bags is preferable, as this prevents leaves from blowing back onto your property or your neighbors property before they are collected.

Leaf Bags:  Brown paper leaf bags are available at the Recycling Center at any time at the price of 3 bags per one dollar. There is no limit to the number of bags purchased. During the month of November only, a resident may receive up to fifteen (15) free bags (per address).

Collection of loose leaves (not in bags or barrels)

Residents will have the opportunity to rake leaves into the street for collection by leaf sweeper.  Leaves cannot be raked into the street more than one week before the scheduled collection dates, and must be kept at least ten feet from a storm drain inlet. Schedule of collection of loose leaves.

Drop-off at the Recycling Center

Leaves may also be brought to the Hawthorne Recycling Center (Ryerson Way off Wagaraw Blvd at the baseball fields) anytime throughout the year during regular hours of operation.
