Library Programs
The Following programs are offered at Hawthorne's Louis Bay 2nd Library, 345 Lafayette Avenue. Contact the Library at 973-427-5745 for details.
- Yoga - Every Monday at 10:30 am
- Golden Age Movies – Saturdays at 1:00 pm
- Book Club for Seniors (registration required) – Third Thursday of each month, 2:30 to 4:30 pm.

Nutrition Site
Passaic County provides lunch every weekday for Senior Citizens at various sites in the County, including at the Charles J. Smith Senior Center located in St. Clement's church at 271 Lafayette Avenue in Hawthorne. Contact the Center at 973-423-1027 for details.
Senior Citizens Organizations
Golden Circle meets at Hawthorne's Louis Bay 2nd Library, 345 Lafayette Ave., on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at 12:30 pm.
Golden Horizon meets at St. Anthony's Church, 276 Diamond Bridge Ave., on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month at 1:00 pm..
Operation Reassurance
The Hawthorne Police Department provides checks on senior citizens who live alone. Call (973) 427-1800 to register.
Flu & Pneumonia Vaccines
The Hawthorne Board of Health provides vaccinations, blood pressure screenings and other health services. Call (973) 427-555 ext 223 for details.
NJ EASE
NJ EASE ( Easy Access Single Entry) is a state initiative which promotes the well-being of individuals over 60 by providing easy, local access to a coordinated system of consumer responsive services to enable self-sufficiency. Call 1-877-222-3737 for details.
Transportation assistance:
Medical and Dental Appointments
Volunteers provide rides, by appointment, to Hawthorne senior citizen residents who need transportation for medical and dental appointments. Call (973) 427-5555 ext. 340 to leave a message if you need this transportation assistance. This program is NOT for emergency service and cannot be used for admission to or discharge from a hospital or nursing home. Passengers must be able to get to the vehicle on their own. A personal care attendant may accompany a passenger to assist on the trip, but must travel to and from the same destination. Passengers are required to schedule ride requests 24 hours in advance for in-town appointments, and 48 hours in advance for out-of-town appointments, and are encouraged to call to schedule the ride as soon at the appointment is made.

Food Shopping
Passaic County Paratransit provides transportation for seniors who need rides for food shopping and other purposes. Call (973) 305-9328 for details.

Senior Citizen Shopping Trips January through June 2010
The borough provides transportation for senior citizens to area malls twice a month, every other Monday (Tuesday, if Monday is a holiday), and every week in December. The bus leaves from behind the Library on Grand Avenue at 9:30 am and returns at approximately 2:30 pm. For information, call Luceilla Willoughby at

Resident Special Needs Program

Senior Citizen Optonline (Cablevision) Discount
Optonline (Cablevision of Oakland) has implemented a senior citizen discount in the amount of ten percent (10%) of the monthly rate of the broadcast basic level of cable television service for residents who qualify subject to the following requirements:
- Any person sixty-two years of age or older.
- Eligible senior citizens cannot share the subscription with more than one person in the same household who is less than sixty-two (62) years of age.
- Senior citizen income requirements must be below the threshold established in the Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled Program (N.J.S.A. 30:4D-21) The 2010 income levels are as follows:
Single Income level: $24,432
Married Income level: $29,956
- This discount only applies to the broadcast basic level of cable television service, and will not apply to any additional service, feature, or equipment offered by the Company including any premium channel services and pay-per-view services.
