THE HAWTHORNE MOTORCYCLE SQUAD
The Hawthorne Police Department Motorcycle Squad has a proud tradition that dates back to the early 1920's. The current squad is seven officers strong under the leadership of Sergeant Peter Terrizzi. Members must pass a rigorous two week training course in motorcycle riding skills and safety. In addition to regular patrol member's duties a squad member's duties include parades, escorts, and participation in various charity events.
HAWTHORNE POLICE BICYCLE UNIT
The seven member Bicycle Squad was established in 1998. The squad utilizes Smith & Wesson mountain bikes. The purchase of these bikes was made possible through donations made by local businesses. The members complete a grueling weeklong instructional course and are certified as Bicycle Patrol Officers.
The bike patrol allows officers into areas that are not accessible to patrol vehicles and at the same time improves police-community relations. The squad can be seen on patrol around town and at many special events during the year. Bike officers participate in promoting bicycle safety to all Borough residents through various programs.
THE HAWTHORNE EDUCATION SERVICES UNIT
The Hawthorne Police Department Education Services Unit is made up of officers trained in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program and the Law Related Education program. The officers are resource officers who teach D.A.R.E. in all Borough Schools grades K through 8. In the Hawthorne High School and Lincoln Middle School, the officers assist the classroom teachers and principals through Law Related Education, and maintain an office at the High School.
