Fire Prevention

Duties of the Fire Prevention Bureau consist of the enforcement of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, inspecting all commercial buildings and tenants, schools, places of assembly and multi-family dwellings.
Proper permits and inspections must be obtained.(NJAC 5:70-2.12)

Understanding Fire Pit Laws in New Jersey

Currently, the Fire Official also serves as the Borough’s Housing Officer who oversees the proper maintenance of dwellings so as to not pose a threat to the health, safety and welfare of the residents, nor the community in general. The New Jersey Housing Code is strictly followed and enforced.  (NJAC 5:28-1.1)

Another task performed by Fire Prevention is the certification of the operation of smoke detectors required by the State of New Jersey when a home is sold or there is a change of tenant.  To apply for a certification, forms are below under Related Documents & Resources.  Bring the completed form to the Fire Prevention office (with required fees), where you will also schedule your inspection.   

As of July 1, 2022, remote or picture inspections have ended.  All inspections have resumed to pre-pandemic appointment inspections only.

As of February 15, 2025, the portable fire extinguisher requirement has been removed.  The state just passed the law to remove it as part of the inspection and compliance.
