- 2025 HSTC RECENT HIGHLIGHTS:
- 33rd Annual Cel-Earth-Bration was held on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at Hawthorne High School. The Shade Tree Commission gave away a variety of 6-inch, bare root seedlings.
- On April 25, 2025 for Arbor Day, the Shade Tree Commission, in conjunction with students from Washington Elementary School, planted a Saucer Magnolia Tree. The Saucer Magnolia Tree was generously donated by Columbia Bank.
- Green Fair was held September 14, 2025 at the Louis Bay 2nd Library at the Farmers’ Market. The celebration included “green” education, live music, and giveaways. HSTC had a table and held a small survey regarding trees. They also gave away HSTC merchandise of t-shirts, wooden pens, and more for survey participants.
- September 26, 2025 was the 16th Annual Hawthorne Day celebration. Shade Tree Commission manned a table to educate and survey residents regarding Shade Tree Commission and tree care. Give aways included bags, t-shirts, pens, and mugs.
- The beginning of November 2025 we’ll be planting Daffodil bulbs and three native trees, which were awarded to Hawthorne through the Dig In! Grant Program sponsored by CityGreen.
- In November, the 2025 Fall Planting will see 160 new trees planted across Hawthorne neighborhoods, including: Nyssa Sylvatica (black gum), Tilia tomentosa (silver linden), Celtics occidentalis (hackberry), Acer rubrum (red maple), Syringa reticulata (Japanese tree lilac), Koelreuteria paniculata (Golden rain tree), Zelkova serrata (Japanesse zelkova). Additional trees for specific locations: Saucer magnolia (Magnolia & Soulangeana), Yellow Bird Magnolia (Magnolia x brooklynensis), and Green Giant Arborvitaes.
- 2024: Over 80 new street trees planted across Hathorne neighborhoods.
- Community Spotlight: Thanks to our volunteers and the Eagle Scouts for their work in Goffle Brook Park.
- Arbor Day Celebration: Over 100 students attended our tree education event
