New Residents

Welcome to Our Community

As a new resident, we know that you're anxious to become part of your new community. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and tell you a little about your new home. You are invited to explore our website and discover what makes Hawthorne a great place to live, work and play.

Hawthorne is home to approximately 18,000 residents. While we are in close proximity to New York City, we are far enough away to enable us to keep that wonderful small town feel, where people are friendly and care about each other.

  • Churches
    • The many Churches in Hawthorne extend their warm invitation to you and your family. You will enjoy visiting the Church of your choice and worshipping with your neighbors.
  • Garbage, Recycling and Leaves
    • The Borough provides a full range of public services. Recycling is mandatory. We offer both curbside collection of paper, cardboard, cans and bottles and a recycling center for the drop-off of these and other items, all of which complements our weekly curbside garbage collection. For details visit our Garbage and Recycling pages on this website. We also provide curbside collection of Yard waste in the spring and summer, plus curbside collection of both bagged and loose leaves in the fall.
  • Housing
    • Hawthorne neighborhoods afford our community a wide variety of housing including starter homes for young families, new construction, condominiums and a number of apartment complexes.
  • Library
    • The Louis Bay 2nd Library provides historical and cultural resources, entertainment, information, social, and technological services and contains areas for adults, children, and teens, as well as a comprehensive reference department. Many adult, children, and teen programs are offered at the Louis Bay 2nd Library on a regular basis. Participation in several regional library systems allows access to materials that may not be available locally.
    • There are community meeting rooms and art and other exhibits in the William A. Monaghan Jr. Gallery on a rotating basis. The Hawthorne Symphony Orchestra is in residence at the library.
  • Parking Restrictions
    • In order to preserve parking for residents in the vicinity of Hawthorne's New Jersey Transit train station, the Borough has implemented on-street parking restrictions south of Diamond Bridge Avenue and east of Goffle Road. On most of these streets, parking between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. is restricted to residents who have purchased Residential parking stickers. On all streets, no car may be left unmoved for over 24 hours.
  • Postal Service
    • Hawthorne is served by the Hawthorne Post Office (Zip Code 07506), located at 226 Diamond Bridge Avenue, 973-423-2493.
  • Property Maintenance Standards
    • The Borough of Hawthorne is a great place to live because Hawthorne residents take pride in their homes and neighborhoods. To keep Hawthorne looking great, the Borough has adopted ordinances regulating property maintenance in both residential and commercial areas.
  • Recreation
    • Our community offers a local multiplex movie theater, a municipal pool, tennis courts and a wide range of recreational programs. Hawthorne is home to several Dance Schools, Karate Institutes, a Gymnastics Academy and the Hawthorne Boys and Girls Club.
  • Schools
    • The Hawthorne Public Schools are dedicated to the mission of providing quality educational opportunities to all students. The K through 12 school district has a total enrollment of 2400 students in three K through 5 elementary schools, a middle school for grades 6, 7 and 8 and a 9 to 12 high school. Our schools provide a safe and vibrant learning environment with a broad curriculum that is aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. The curriculum, which includes Advanced Placement and Honors programs, is designed to be comprehensive and varied to provide for individual learning opportunities and learning styles. The success of the district program is reflected in the performance of our students on the State assessments where our students score far above the state benchmarks of academic proficiency set by the NJ Department of Education.
    • St. Anthony's Catholic Elementary School (K through 8) and the Hawthorne Christian Academy (K through 12) serve those seeking a faith based education.
    • Several colleges are located nearby, including Passaic and Bergen County Community, William Paterson University, Montclair University and Ramapo College.
  • Transportation
    • Residents enjoy easy accessibility to mass transit from our local train and bus routes to New York City and motor vehicle access to Routes 208, 287, 4, 17, 20, 80 and the Garden State Parkway.
  • Utilities
  • Volunteers
    • Our Borough is very fortunate to have citizens willing to serve by their involvement in Church, community organizations, committees and commissions. We invite you to become involved in your new community.
