Passaic County

The Borough of Hawthorne is one of 16 municipalities within Passaic County, New Jersey.  Passaic County borders New York State on the north and is surrounded on the other sides by Sussex, Morris, Essex and Bergen counties in New Jersey.  Passaic County has 186 square miles of land area, making it the 18th in size among New Jersey’s counties.  On the basis of population, it ranks as the 9th most populous county in New Jersey.  The 2020 Decennial Census estimated the population of Passaic County to be 524,118.

County Clerk Outreach Services
Due to new national rules from the U.S. Department of State, effective October 1, 2025, the county clerk's office is no longer allowed to hold routine outreach events in the community.  For details on passport services, required documents, or extended office hours, residents can visit www.passaiccountyclerk.org or contact the office directly at (973)225-3690. Appointments are required.

Surrogate Court
Welcome to the Passaic County Surrogate's Court.  The Surrogate's Court is a court of limited jurisdiction which handles matters dealing with Probate, Guardianships, and Adoptions, as well as oversees the assets of minors under its jurisdiction.  Appointments are required.

Goffle Brook Park

Passaic County owns and maintains Goffle Brook Park located at 675 Goffle Road, Hawthorne.  The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.  For information on park permits, please visit the Park Permits page. For maintenance issues contact the Passaic County Parks Department.

ParaTransit
The Passaic County Paratransit Program maintains a fleet of vehicles, which provide transportation for the county’s senior citizens and disabled residents in need of non-emergency rides to medical appointments, shopping centers, county-run nutrition and adult day care sites, and for the disabled residents to attend group work programs. Special lift vans are available to accommodate non-ambulatory individuals.

Human Services

The Department of Human Services is an umbrella social service agency concerned with the planning and funding services for the county’s disadvantaged and homeless citizens.
