Garage Sales

The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management has issued Administrative Order 2020-15 which permits Yard Sales and Garage Sales to resume.  The Hawthorne Municipal Code, which still applies, requires an application for a permit, which is issued by the Office of the Borough Clerk.  The permit is good for no more than three successive days and no household may obtain more than two permits in any year.  The sale may take place from 9:00 a.m. until sundown.  Signs may be placed on private property advertising the sale the day before or day of the sale.  As Borough Hall remains closed to the public, the application for a permit is available on-line or may be picked-up in the rear lobby of the Municipal Building.  The completed form may be submitted back to the Clerk’s Office by email or by leaving the form in the drop box in the Municipal Building Parking lot. We will contact you when the permit has been issued.  And I am very pleased to let you know that Mayor Goldberg has issued an Executive Order waiving the permit fee for the remainder of the year!

Safe social distancing measures must continue to be followed.  For gatherings of less than 25 people, face masks are strongly recommended and should be worn by those holding the sale and those visiting.  There should be frequent washing or wiping of surfaces and hands.  Where possible, maintaining a six-foot distance is also strongly suggested.  Contact should be limited to nothing more than the point of sale and exchange of money.  We in Hawthorne have done an outstanding job in combating this Pandemic.  We need to continue to be smart in our choices and aware of those around us.  I remain available to answer your questions.  I can be reached by email at or or by phone at (973) 427-1167.
